Quick Takes: Family Room Rug Number 1

by Samantha James

Hello! Sorry for the late post today; in a real life throw back Thursday, one of my besties from home called to say she was in NYC! So Lou and I joined her and her mom on some Brooklyn adventures. Then I got home to a new rug!

You might remember that I had narrowed down our rug search to these seven options. Then I spent too much time on my phone on the New Jersey Turnpike (Bret was driving) on Black Friday and ended up with two more options - neither of which has much in common with the original batch - and both of which I ordered, because I could not decide between the two. The first, an aqua Moroccan Dhurrie rug in a Greek key pattern, arrived today, and it's a bit different than I remembered. I guess there's a moral about shopping for rugs on one's phone in there.

But the good news is: I love it.

When I saw it on Overstock, I thought the rug would be lighter in base - that the aqua itself was lighter, and maybe the cream was more of a dominant factor. But the fact that it's a bit darker is almost certainly a blessing in disguise for dirt-hiding purposes. And I love, love, love, the color it is. I am just a sucker for aqua and deep turquoise - not the overly bright versions, but the deeper, greener, richer hues - and this rug just brings in a lovely, light, almost sea-foamy addition to the blues we already have in there. It also plays gorgeously with our mushroom colored seating, which is a big plus.

The texture is traditional Dhurrie - which is to say flat-woven from wool. It's not at all precious feeling. Here's a couple closer-ups.

I think the texture is perfect. It balances out what I think is a more sophisticated pattern with a more casual vibe. And the size, 6' x 9' - also perfect! Leaves enough of a border of wood floor to not close off the space, but creates a nice big living area. It's not centered now, because I can't get in underneath our (gigantic) Christmas tree, but I know it will be perfect for this spot. And it's reversible! That gives us so many more spills than a non-reversible rug!

Yes, I think I'm in love.

But what do you think? I'm deliberately not showing you option number 2, because a) I don't have it, and b) I don't want to prejudice the feelings about this one yet. But the other one will bring a very different vibe, for sure. I hope it's here tomorrow!

Also: we got really, really into Christmas this year.

See y'all tomorrow.
